Memoirs that detail the extraordinary efforts of Ginger’s mother and father, to protect 7 year old Ginger, her 11 year old sister to evade capture, through repeated movements across the island, the generous efforts of many Filipinos to help them. Includes many details about her mining engineer father, Charles Hansen who assumed an Officer commission in the American Guerrillas of Mindanao (AGOM), managed division supplies, and the efforts of her 3 brothers, the two youngest were well under age of 18 and became accomplished soldiers and guerilla fighters by end of WWII.
Guerilla Padre (1946). By Father Joseph Edward Haggerty, Catholic Jesuit, on Mindanao till 1945. Longmans Green Company. Details Father Haggerty’s memoirs and his decision to remain on Mindanao after the surrender, followed by 4 years of clerical ministering to and supporting the Filipino people under horrendous conditions. He is well known to have covertly aided many of the American Guerillas, repeatedly evading being killed or taken into custody by the Japanese army. He also detailed many atrocities committed on civilians and fellow priests. He was well known to Ginger Hansen Holmes and her entire family, to Fertig and his senior officers, “Ben” Farrens, “Bit” Holder, my father, Nick “Danny” Pociluyko, among many AGOM members for whom her gave counsel and support. He also personally sent letters to family members about their AGOM members, many who were initially listed as missing for up to 2 years before communication could be sent out.
We Remained: Three years behind enemy lines in the Philippines. (1954). By R.W Volckmann. Describes then Lt Col. (later General) Volckmann’s first-hand account of refusal to surrender, his evading capture after surrender at Bataan and secret organization of guerilla resistance on Luzon.
Lang: The WW II story of an American Guerilla on Mindanao. By Norman Rudi. 2003 MacMillan Publishing. Describes Dick Lang’s experience initially with 19th Bomber Group as Assistant Crew Chief and work at Port Lamon district, as coast watcher and was involved in various support activities.
Wendell Fertig and His Guerilla Forces in the Philippines: Fighting the Japanese Occupation1942-1945. (2015) By Kent Holmes (Ginger’s husband). McFarland Company. Effectively details Fertig’s decision to evade capture and not surrender, his assumption of command as senior officer to organize a guerilla resistance. Describes the many challenges that Fertig and his officers had with organizing Filipino constabulary, gaining support of the Muslim community, preventing insurrections, monitoring enemy movements, reporting intelligence to MacArthur in Australia, and managing on limited supplies.
